现任北京大学光华管理学院院长、经济学教授北京大学网络经济研究中心主任。 1959年出生于陕西省吴堡县，1982年毕业于西北大学经济学本科，1984年获得西北大学经济学硕士学位，1992年获得牛津大学经济学硕士学位，1994年获得牛津大学经济学博士学位。 1984年至1990年在国家体改委员会工作过。 20年来，他以独立学者的角度，积极参与中国改革实践的洪流。 他是国内最早提出双轨制价格改革构想，系统论证的学者。 他的公司理论、公司改革的理论成果，以及市场化经济改革的理论解体和政策主张，在经济学理论界、政府相关部门和公司界都有广泛的影响。 他发表的关于中国经济改革和社会快速发展的观点一直是媒体关注的焦点。 根据《中国社会科学院引文索引》的统计，他的论坛引用率连续多年位居第一。 2000年，他获得了国家自然科学基金“优秀青年基金”。 2002年被评为“cctv2002年中国经济年度人物”。 2006年3月他发表了一篇题为“理性地考虑中国改革”的长文，把有关改革的争论推向了高潮。 2008年入选“中国改革30年经济30人”。

近年来，张维迎还致力于中国大学体制的改革，特别是商学院教育体制的改革。 他是2003年北京大学教师体制改革方案的第一设计师。

张维迎现任国务院学位委员会应用经济学学科评议组成员、中国公司家论坛首席经济学家。 他曾经担任或还担任的其他社会兼职包括国务院国家审查制改革专家委员会委员。 国家新闻化专家委员会委员《电信法》起草小组专家咨询委员会委员国家自然科学基金管理科学部专家委员会委员、工商管理小组副总裁《经济研究》、国际学术杂志journal of restructuring finance和annals o 英语学术杂志china economic review (2003-2005 )和管理顾问委员会委员。 曾任国际中国管理学会( iacmr )副会长、中国经济学( cea ) (英国)副主席。

张维迎出版的第一部着作有《公司的公司家-契约理论》( 1995 )、《博弈论与新闻经济学》( 1996 )、《公司理论与中国公司改革》( 1999 )、《产权、政府与信用》( 2001 )、《新闻、信任与法律》( 2003 )、《 、“价格、市场和公司家”( 2006 )、“中国改革30年”( 2008、主编)、“市场逻辑」()等。 其他几十篇中英语学术论文发表在国内外权威期刊上。
